De competitie Ecotrophelia is in 2000 opgericht in Frankrijk. Vanaf 2008 is er een Europese finale. Voorafgaand aan deze finale organiseert elk deelnemend Europees land haar eigen nationale competitie. Elk land vaardigt het meest innovatieve voedselconcept af voor de Europese finale. Ecotrophelia groeit ieder jaar verder. Meer en meer scholen en universiteiten melden zich aan en komen met de meest verrassende concepten.
In 2011 nam Kees de Gooijer, Chief Inspiration Officer van TKI Agri & Food, voor het eerst deel aan Ecotrophelia. Hij werd benaderd door Federico Morais van het European Technology Platform "Food for Life om te jureren bij de Europese finale. Kees raakte enthousiast en benaderde Wagening University om in 2012 deel te nemen. Ralf Hartemink, opleidingsdirecteur Food programma's, Agrotechnologie en voedingswetenschappen, stelde daarop een studententeam samen en vertegenwoordigde Nederland in de Europese finale van 2012 met het product "Chef Lupin" , een vleesvervanger op basis van lupine. Het Wageningse team kwam, zag en sleepte meteen de hoofdprijs in de wacht.
Vanaf 2013 organiseert TKI Agri & Food de nationale voorronde. Sindsdien strijden elk jaar verschillende onderwijsinstellingen om een Europese finaleplaats. Vaak weet de Nederlandse winnaar ook hoog te eindigen in de Europese competitie en soms leidt deelname aan Ecotrophelia tot de opstart van een eigen bedrijf. Altijd is Ecotrophelia een leerzame én leuke aanvulling op je studie.
In 2016 heeft Het Wageningse team Green Leaves de ticket naar Parijs gewonnen met een spread van onder andere wortelloof. In 2017 vertegenwoordigde het team Poppeas Nederland in de Europese finale in Londen en in 2018 reisden de teamleden van Panggies naar Parijs voor de finale. Zij wonnen daar de communicatieprijs. In 2019 ging het Maastrichtse team Oat-It naar Keulen. Hun voorbereidingen hebben ze vastgelegd in verschillende vlogs. In 2020 kon het team Shiitake Biltong vanwege de corona-pandemie niet afreizen naar Parijs. Ze waren het eerste team dat Nederland vertegenwoordigde tijdens een geheel online Europese finale.
